The word of the Lord came to Joel in the midst of an horrific emergency: a devastating plague of locusts that jeopardised  every aspect of human life. This startling picture is not a random event, but the start of the Lord’s judgement of a disobedient nation.

Joel prophesied that the coming Day of the Lord would have ramifications for Israel and the world. But there was the possibility of the Lord being gracious and compassionate – if the people would repent and return to him. We see the breath-taking promise of God to pour out His spirit on all people, and the wonderful picture of a restored people. 

For us who live this side of the Cross, this series will help us read the Old Testament through the lens of Jesus Christ. We will heed the warnings, encouragements, comforts and marvel at the sovereign nature of our just, kind and compassionate God.
