At this moment in history, ‘obedience’ is a concept in exile. It is culturally suspicious. At best, it smacks of formalism. At worst it perpetuates an oppressive hierarchy. Our culture says that everyone must be free to find their own truth and follow their own path. Romans 12-16 stands in stark contrast to this cultural narrative. Here God’s word calls the Christian to live in light of the mercies of God, putting aside the deeds of darkness, and to put on the armour of light, offering themselves to God in holy obedience.
