Memorial garden and burial options

A new chapter for St Paul’s cemetery

The cemetery has been operating continually since it was originally established back in 1847, but the church is now creating a new Memorial Garden to provide options for the interment of ashes. This new garden will include pathways for easy access, native tree plantings, new garden beds, some seating and the instalment of several options for the interment of ashes. Frequently asked questions

The Cemetery is managed and operated by St Paul’s Anglican Carlingford & North Rocks (St Paul’s). The new Memorial Garden section will complement the existing historic cemetery that has been in the parish for more than 170 years.

St Paul’s is responsible for maintaining the Cemetery grounds (pathways, fencing, driveway). Maintaining the niches and grave plots themselves is the responsibility of the family members or descendants of the deceased. St Paul’s strives to maintain the beauty, peace and tranquility at the site, and may also undertake basic maintenance and weeding within the plots from time to time. St Paul’s will maintain the new Memorial Garden and ash interment niches. Parramatta City Council has no responsibility for maintaining the Cemetery.

Anyone may be interred in the Cemetery, however, any interment or burial service at the cemetery is required by church law to follow the Anglican form of service. If requested, St Paul’s pastors may conduct these services.

Applications to purchase an interment right can be made by contacting the St Paul’s church office (details below) and completing the forms provided. St Paul’s will determine, in consultation with the client, the location of purchased niches, burial plots and/or cylinders in the Memorial Garden. Locations will be confirmed on receipt of full payment.

The steps involved are as follows:

  1. The client applies to purchase a Perpetual Interment Right accompanied by the appropriate fee
  2. St Paul’s issues a Certificate of Perpetual Interment Right
  3. Prior to interment, St Paul’s issues an Order of Interment and assists with memorial plaque or headstone design and procurement

The memorial wall, garden edge niches and single cylinders are designed for the interment of one person’s ashes. The dual cylinders are designed for the joint interment of two sets of ashes. Multiple casket burials in a single plot can be arranged on application.

The cemetery is currently operational for ash interments and casket burials.

Yes, in consultation with St Paul’s, you may choose the location within the memorial garden.

Memorial plaques and headstones are to be arranged from St Paul’s preferred supplier. St Paul’s will assist with the design and layout of the plaque to maintain a consistent standard and use of materials and design elements that complement the Memorial Garden’s design and maintains the integrity of the historic St Paul’s Cemetery.

The St Paul’s Carlingford Cemetery is located at: 233 Marsden Road, Carlingford, NSW, 2118. You are more than welcome to visit the Cemetery at any time.

Please be aware, however, that the entrance from Marsden Road is not accessible for vehicles. The best way to access the Cemetery is to park in Kay Street, off Tomah Street, where the cemetery can be accessed via a 40 metre, level walk through Simpson Reserve (adjacent to number 20 Kay Street).

All Memorial Wall, Garden Edge Niches, Cylinders and Burial Plots are provided with perpetual interment rights.

A client may cancel the purchase for valid reasons. In such cases, a 5% administration fee will be deducted from the purchase price for each cancellation, and the balance returned to the Interment Right holder.

A transfer of interment right to another person is possible. This must be conducted formally through St Paul’s church office, to allow for the appropriate documentation and updating of official records. An administration fee of 5% of purchase price will apply to each transfer.

Interment rights may be bequeathed. The applicant becomes the new owner only after a ‘Transfer of Interment Right as a Bequest’ form has been completed and the Register has been updated. An administration fee of 5% of purchase price will apply to each transfer.

St Paul’s may revoke an Interment Right if it has not been exercised within 50 years of granting. Before revoking an Interment Right, St Paul’s will make every reasonable attempt to contact the Interment Right Holder, including by registered post. If no response is received within 28 days, the Interment Right will be deemed to be forfeited.

St Paul’s church office will maintain a Register of the Interment Right Holder’s details and payment. St Paul’s will maintain the Memorial Garden and Cemetery grounds in good condition. The client is responsible for the physical maintenance of the individual plaque, niche, cylinder or burial plot. The client is responsible for keeping St Paul’s informed of changes to contact details of the Rights Holder and next of kin, especially if there is an extended period of time between purchasing the Interment Right and its use.
